Tips for Cooking Ground Pork to Perfection
Cooking with ground pork is straightforward, but a few tips can elevate your dishes. Always brown your ground pork thoroughly to develop rich flavors and a pleasing texture. Break it up with a spatula as it cooks, ensuring even browning. For stir-fries or dishes where you want crispy bits, avoid overcrowding the pan; cook in batches if necessary. When making meatballs or meatloaf, don’t overmix the meat, as this can lead to a tough texture. Gently combine ingredients until just mixed. Ground pork pairs wonderfully with a variety of spices, from savory herbs like sage and thyme to Asian-inspired flavors like ginger and soy sauce (or tamari/coconut aminos for dietary restrictions). Don’t be afraid to experiment to find your favorite combinations!
Frequently Asked Questions About Ground Pork
Q: What’s the difference between ground pork and ground sausage?
A: Ground pork is simply ground meat from a pig, usually from the shoulder (pork butt) or picnic roast, with no added seasonings. Ground sausage, on the other hand, is ground pork that has been seasoned with a specific blend of spices and sometimes other ingredients, like herbs or binders, to achieve a particular flavor profile (e.g., breakfast sausage, Italian sausage).
Q: Is ground pork healthy?
A: Yes, ground pork can be a healthy part of your diet. It’s a good source of protein, B vitamins, and minerals like zinc and selenium. The fat content can vary, similar to ground beef. You can choose leaner options or drain excess fat after cooking. Incorporating it into recipes with plenty of vegetables, as seen in many of our dishes, further boosts its nutritional value.
Q: How long can I store ground pork?
A: Raw ground pork should be stored in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. If you don’t plan to use it within that time, it’s best to freeze it. Cooked ground pork can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Q: Can I freeze ground pork?
A: Absolutely! Ground pork freezes beautifully. For best quality, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or foil, then place it in a freezer-safe bag or container. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 3-4 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before cooking.

Ingredients
- 8 grain free tortillas, (we love Siete or Whole Foods brand almond flour tortillas)
For the slaw:
- 2 cups coleslaw mix, (or just shredded cabbage and carrots)
- 1 lime, juice of
- 1 tbsp avocado oil
- 1/2 avocado, cubed
- sea salt and pepper, to taste
For the taco meat:
- 2 lbs ground pork
- 3 tbsp homemade taco seasoning
Optional toppings:
- Tomatoes or salsa
- Chipotle aioli
- Cilantro
Instructions
-
Place all of the coleslaw ingredients in a small mixing bowl and mix them up until the avocado gets a little broken down but stays mostly chunky. Set aside until you’re ready to plate.
-
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add ground pork to the pan. Break it up with a spatula and continue to cook.
-
When the pork is almost done, add taco seasoning to the pan and mix to combine. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally until the pork is fully cooked and there are some delicious brown bits.
-
Once the pork is done, prepare taco shells as desired and layer your seasoned ground pork, followed by the refreshing coleslaw, right on top of your tortillas. Garnish with your favorite toppings, such as fresh salsa and cilantro. We also love to add a dollop of our chipotle aioli for an extra kick!
