Clean Eating Seafood Stir Fry

In our continuous quest to infuse our diets with more wholesome and delicious seafood, we often seek recipes that are not only bursting with flavor but also quick, easy, and align with specific dietary preferences. This meticulously crafted Paleo and Whole30 seafood stir fry stands out as an exceptional choice, promising a delightful culinary experience without compromising on health or convenience. It’s the quintessential healthy stir fry, perfectly suited for a bustling weeknight dinner, yet elegant enough for a weekend gathering. Embracing the principles of clean eating, this dish masterfully combines lean proteins, vibrant vegetables, and aromatic spices into a single pan, making it an ideal addition to any healthy eating plan. The beauty of a stir fry lies in its versatility and speed, transforming simple ingredients into a gourmet-like meal in mere minutes. For those adhering to Paleo or Whole30 guidelines, finding meals that are both compliant and exciting can sometimes be a challenge, but this recipe effortlessly bridges that gap, offering a vibrant, nutrient-dense, and deeply satisfying option.

Two bowls of vibrant Paleo and Whole30 seafood stir-fry, featuring succulent shrimp, flaky white fish, crisp broccoli florets, thinly sliced celery, and sweet onion, all seasoned with a rich Cajun blend and garnished with fresh green onions and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes.

Crafting the Perfect Stir Fry Veggies: A Symphony of Flavors and Textures

The foundation of any great stir fry lies in its selection of fresh, crisp vegetables, and this seafood stir fry is no exception. For our rendition, we specifically chose a delightful trio of sweet onion, verdant broccoli, and crunchy celery. This combination offers a balanced profile of flavors and, more importantly, a satisfying textural contrast that elevates the entire dish. The broccoli contributes a subtle earthy bitterness and delightful florets that absorb the rich stir-fry sauce beautifully, while the celery introduces a refreshing, crisp bite that prevents the dish from becoming too uniform. Onion, a classic stir-fry staple, provides a pungent sweetness that mellows as it cooks, forming an aromatic base for the other ingredients.

However, the beauty of a stir fry is its inherent flexibility, inviting you to experiment with almost any vegetables you have on hand or that strike your fancy. Do you have a surplus of bell peppers? Sliced bell peppers—red, yellow, or orange—would introduce a sweet, vibrant crunch and a burst of color. Zucchini and yellow squash, cut into half-moons or sticks, would cook down quickly and add a tender texture. Snap peas or snow peas are fantastic for an added crispness and natural sweetness. Carrots, thinly julienned or sliced into rounds, offer a lovely sweetness and vibrant hue. For a touch of heat and unmistakable aroma, consider adding thinly sliced ginger or a sprinkle of chili flakes to your vegetable medley. Even leafy greens like spinach or bok choy can be swiftly wilted in at the end, adding a fresh, green element.

When selecting your vegetables, consider their cooking times. Harder vegetables like carrots and broccoli might benefit from a slightly earlier introduction to the pan, or being cut into smaller pieces, ensuring everything reaches optimal tenderness simultaneously. Softer vegetables such as bell peppers or zucchini can be added later to maintain their structure and slight crispness. The goal is to achieve a harmonious blend where each vegetable retains its distinct character while contributing to the overall integrity and appeal of the stir-fry. This thoughtful approach to vegetable selection not only enhances the nutritional value of your meal but also its visual appeal and palatability, making every bite a discovery.

Choosing Your Catch: The Best Seafood Options for a Flavorful Stir Fry

The star of any seafood stir fry, naturally, is the seafood itself. For this particular recipe, we utilized shrimp and halibut, primarily because they were conveniently available in our freezer, ready to be transformed into a delectable meal. Shrimp are an excellent choice for stir-fries due to their quick cooking time and sweet, delicate flavor. They turn pink when cooked through, providing a visual cue for doneness, and their texture is firm yet tender, making them a universally loved ingredient.

Halibut, a lean white fish, offers a firm, flaky texture that holds up beautifully to the high heat of stir-frying without falling apart. Its mild flavor ensures it complements the robust Cajun seasoning without being overwhelmed. However, the world of seafood is vast and exciting, offering numerous alternatives that would be equally fantastic in this dish. Any flaky white fish would be a superb substitute for halibut. Consider snapper, known for its sweet, nutty flavor and firm texture, or cod, which is incredibly versatile and flakes easily, absorbing flavors wonderfully. Tilapia, haddock, or even mahi-mahi are also excellent choices, providing varying degrees of firmness and flavor profiles that will integrate seamlessly into the stir-fry.

Beyond white fish, don’t shy away from other types of seafood. Scallops, with their sweet and tender flesh, cook incredibly fast and add a touch of elegance. Mussels or clams could also be incorporated, though they would require a slightly different cooking approach to ensure they open properly. When selecting your seafood, whether fresh or frozen, always prioritize quality. Fresh seafood should have a mild, oceanic scent, not a strong “fishy” odor. Frozen seafood, if properly handled and thawed, can be just as good, if not better, offering convenience and often superior flash-frozen quality, especially if you don’t live near a coast.

To ensure we always have access to premium, high-quality seafood, we highly recommend the seafood delivery company Fish Fixe. Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp ghee, (or grass-fed butter if not Whole30 or coconut oil for dairy free)
  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 pound white fish, cut into bite-sized cubes, (cod, snapper, etc)
  • 1 onion, sliced into thin strips
  • 4 cups broccoli florets
  • 6 ribs celery, thinly-sliced on a diagonal
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp clam juice, (can sub 1 tbsp fish sauce)
  • 1 tbsp coconut aminos
  • 1 batch Cajun seasoning, (see recipe below for homemade seasoning blend)
  • 1 tsp arrowroot starch

Optional toppings:

  • green onions, sliced
  • red pepper flakes

Cajun seasoning:

  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground pepper
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne

Instructions

  1. Begin by preparing your seafood and vegetables. Ensure shrimp are peeled and deveined, and white fish is cut into uniform bite-sized cubes for even cooking. Slice the onion into thin strips, chop broccoli into florets, thinly slice celery on a diagonal for an attractive presentation, and mince the garlic. While preparing these, also whisk together your stir-fry sauce ingredients: clam juice (or fish sauce), coconut aminos, the homemade Cajun seasoning blend, and arrowroot starch. Set this mixture aside.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the ghee over medium heat. Once the ghee is melted and shimmering, add the prepared shrimp and fish to the skillet. Cook for approximately 3-4 minutes, or until the seafood is opaque and thoroughly cooked through. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan; cook in batches if necessary to ensure even searing. Once cooked, remove the seafood from the skillet and place it on a clean plate, setting it aside for later.
  3. Utilizing the same skillet, now add the sliced onion, broccoli florets, and thinly sliced celery. Sauté for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until the vegetables begin to soften slightly but still retain a pleasant crunch. This ensures they are tender-crisp, a hallmark of a great stir-fry.
  4. Add the minced garlic to the skillet with the softened vegetables. Continue to stir and cook for just 1 minute more. The garlic should become fragrant but not browned, adding a crucial aromatic layer to the dish.
  5. Pour the previously whisked sauce mixture into the skillet with the vegetables. Stir continuously to ensure the sauce thickens evenly and coats all the vegetables. The arrowroot starch will work quickly to create a glossy, flavorful glaze.
  6. Return the cooked seafood (shrimp and fish) back into the skillet with the sauced vegetables. Gently toss everything together to ensure the seafood is well coated with the delicious stir-fry sauce and heated through. Cook for just another minute or two, being careful not to overcook the seafood.
  7. Serve your flavorful Paleo + Whole30 Seafood Stir Fry immediately. Garnish generously with the optional sliced green onions and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for an added burst of freshness and a touch of heat. Enjoy this quick, healthy, and satisfying meal!
