Welcome to a special holiday treat! As the festive season twinkles, we’re thrilled to share a cherished part of our Christmas morning tradition with you: our incredible Cinnamon Apple Streusel Bread. This delightful creation, fresh from our kitchen, is our contribution to the joyous Christmas breakfast we’ll be sharing with family. It’s more than just a recipe; it’s a taste of holiday comfort, designed to be enjoyed by everyone at your table.
For years, my mom’s legendary cinnamon rolls were the star of Christmas morning, much to the delight of my nephews. While I adored seeing their messy, happy faces, those rolls weren’t exactly aligned with my paleo lifestyle. I confess, there were moments of green-eyed envy! So, this year, I took matters into my own hands, determined to craft a holiday treat that everyone could savor, especially Justin and me. And oh, what a treat it is! Seriously, good luck sharing it with anyone else, because Justin and I could have easily devoured the entire loaf the first time we baked it. The anticipation of enjoying it again on Christmas morning has been building ever since.
Our Cinnamon Apple Streusel Bread is truly a decadent experience. The bread itself boasts a comforting, subtly savory base, perfectly complemented by a luscious streusel topping. This streusel is a velvety dream, studded with tender apple chunks, all harmoniously bound together by a naturally sweet honey-cinnamon date paste. Prepare yourself; this bread is so incredibly delicious, you’ll want to roll up your sleeves and dive right in!
Doesn’t that picture just make you want to reach through the screen and grab a slice? The magic truly happens with the streusel topping. The rich blend of cinnamon and date paste evokes the familiar warmth of classic cinnamon rolls, while the tender apple chunks elevate it to an entirely new level, adding a delightful, almost apple-pie-like component. This isn’t just bread; it’s a sensory journey, a perfect fusion of flavors and textures. We feel it’s our best Christmas recipe to date because it manages to be indulgent without compromising on wholesome ingredients. Consider this your official warning: resisting a second (or third) slice will be nearly impossible!
Why Choose This Paleo Cinnamon Apple Streusel Bread?
In a world overflowing with holiday treats, finding options that are both incredibly delicious and aligned with a paleo, gluten-free, or refined sugar-free lifestyle can be a challenge. That’s where our Cinnamon Apple Streusel Bread shines. This recipe isn’t just a substitute; it’s a celebration of wholesome ingredients coming together to create something truly spectacular. We’ve carefully selected ingredients that are naturally flavorful and nourishing, ensuring that every bite is guilt-free indulgence.
Almond Flour & Tapioca Flour: Instead of traditional wheat flour, we use a blend of almond flour for its rich flavor and healthy fats, and tapioca flour for that perfect tender crumb and binding power. This combination makes the bread naturally gluten-free and provides a lovely texture that’s neither too dense nor too crumbly.
Dates & Maple Syrup: The sweetness in both the bread and the streusel comes from natural sources. Medjool dates create a caramel-like paste in the streusel, offering fiber and a rich, deep sweetness. Pure maple syrup in the bread provides a lighter, balanced sweetness without any refined sugars. These natural sweeteners contribute to the bread’s unique flavor profile and make it suitable for those avoiding processed sugars.
Fresh Apples & Warm Cinnamon: What’s a streusel bread without the star flavors? Diced apples add pockets of fruity sweetness and a delicate moisture, contrasting beautifully with the warming notes of cinnamon. Cinnamon is not just a flavor enhancer; it’s also known for its health benefits, adding another layer of goodness to this wholesome treat.
This bread offers a fantastic alternative for anyone with dietary restrictions or those simply looking for a healthier yet equally satisfying option for their holiday breakfast or brunch spread. It’s proof that you don’t have to sacrifice flavor or festivity when eating mindfully.
Tomorrow morning, we’ll be snuggled up, enjoying generous slices of this bread (perhaps with a warm peppermint mocha or two) and relishing each other’s company. We sincerely hope you’ll be creating similar cozy moments and making wonderful memories this holiday season! We can hardly wait to see all the exciting things the new year will bring. Cheers to good food and great company!
Tips for Baking the Perfect Cinnamon Apple Streusel Bread
Even though this recipe is designed to be straightforward, a few tips can help ensure your Cinnamon Apple Streusel Bread turns out absolutely perfect every time:
- Quality Ingredients: Since the ingredient list is relatively simple, the quality of each component really shines through. Use fresh, good-quality almond flour, pitted dates, and crisp apples for the best flavor and texture.
- Don’t Overmix: When combining the wet and dry ingredients for the bread batter, mix just until combined. Overmixing can lead to a tougher texture. A few small lumps are perfectly fine.
- Date Paste Consistency: For the streusel, ensuring your dates are soft enough to form a smooth paste is key. If microwaving doesn’t fully soften them, you can soak them in hot water for about 10-15 minutes before blending or mashing. This helps achieve that luscious, gooey streusel texture.
- Even Streusel Distribution: While swirling the streusel into the batter, aim for an even distribution. This ensures that every slice gets a delicious ribbon of cinnamon-apple goodness. Don’t worry too much about perfection; a rustic swirl adds character!
- Check for Doneness: Oven temperatures can vary significantly. While 50 minutes is a good guideline, start checking your bread around 45 minutes. The edges should be golden brown, and a toothpick inserted into the bread part (below the streusel) should come out clean. Remember, the streusel topping itself will remain wonderfully gooey.
- Cooling Time: Allowing the bread to cool for a good amount of time, even if you’re eager to dive in, helps it set properly. This makes slicing much easier and prevents it from crumbling.

Ingredients
For the bread:
- 2 cups almond flour
- 1/4 cup tapioca flour
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- Pinch of salt
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup nut or coconut milk (we used cashew milk because a fresh batch was in the fridge)
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
For the streusel topping:
- 8-10 dates, pitted
- 4 tbsp water
- 2 tbsp grassfed butter, melted
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp honey
- 1 small apple, diced
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit, and line a bread pan with parchment paper. (Note: We used a glass bread pan for even baking).
- In a small mixing bowl, use a whisk to combine the almond flour, tapioca flour, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well combined, ensuring there are no lumps.
- In a larger mixing bowl, whisk your eggs until light and frothy. This helps incorporate air, leading to a softer bread texture.
- Add your nut milk and maple syrup to the bowl with the whisked eggs. Continue to whisk until everything is thoroughly combined and smooth.
- Slowly add the dry ingredients mixture to your bowl containing the wet ingredients. Whisk gently until a batter forms. The consistency will be a little thicker than a typical muffin batter.
- Pour the prepared batter evenly into your parchment-lined bread pan and set it aside while you prepare the streusel topping.
- To make the streusel topping, place your pitted dates and water in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in the microwave for 45 seconds to a minute until the dates are very soft.
- Remove the bowl from the microwave and use a fork or potato masher to break down the softened dates until they form a thick, smooth paste.
- Add the melted grassfed butter, cinnamon, honey, and diced apple to the date paste. Stir all the streusel ingredients together until everything is thoroughly combined and wonderfully fragrant.
- Carefully spoon the streusel topping on top of the batter in your bread pan. We like to pour it down the center, lengthwise, creating a generous strip of streusel from one end of the pan to the other.
- Using a spoon or a knife, gently swirl the streusel into the batter. Don’t overmix; you want distinct ribbons of streusel throughout the bread.
- Place the bread pan in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 50 minutes. Baking times can vary depending on your oven (ours is quite old, so we always keep an eye on it). Start checking around 45 minutes. The bread is done when the edges begin to brown. The streusel topping will remain slightly gooey, and a toothpick inserted into the bread portion (below the streusel) should come out clean.
- Once the bread is finished baking, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for at least 15-20 minutes.
- After it has mostly cooled, carefully lift the bread out of the pan using the parchment paper as handles. Transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely, or enjoy it warm.
- Slice and serve! This bread is especially delicious while it’s still warm. For the ultimate holiday experience, pair it with our peppermint mocha!
- Store any leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for 5-7 days.
